Calligraphy Across Scripts: Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi and More

India alone has more than ten major scripts, each with its own logic. Here is what to watch for when you letter them.

The word welcome written in twelve scripts and styles
  • Bengali: like Devanagari it has a headline (matra), but many letters break it. Keep loops open and round.
  • Gurmukhi (Punjabi): a headline joins letters; doubled sounds use the addak sign ੱ rather than a written cluster.
  • Tamil: no headline, rounded forms and a dot (pulli) to silence a consonant. Keep letter heights even.
  • Kannada and Telugu: rounded letters with a “headmark” on top of many characters. Balance the loops.
  • Malayalam: wide, circular letters and special chillu forms at word endings (ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ).
  • Gujarati: Devanagari-like letters without a headline, so even spacing does the work.
  • Arabic and Urdu: written right to left with connected letters; proportions are measured in qalam dots.

The generator handles the complex shaping of all these scripts automatically, so you can focus on choosing a style and a layout.
